Formula 1 has looked at our Sundays, studied the evidence carefully and apparently concluded that fans are receiving slightly too much happiness.

From 2027, the standard Grand Prix distance is expected to fall from 305 kilometres to 290 kilometres. Depending on the circuit, that means approximately two or three fewer laps. The proposal has been approved by the Formula 1 Commission, although it still requires final approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

Yes, I understand that three laps may not sound enormous. BUT

We have already experienced a disrupted season. The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix did not take place as planned in April because of the situation in the Middle East. Malaysia later stepped in to host the Bahrain Grand Prix, which helped, but we still lost part of the season we expected to watch.

Then Formula 1 entered the room and said: “You know what these people need? Less racing.”

Excuse me? Sire…

The official explanation is connected to changes being made to the 2027 power-unit regulations, particularly the permitted fuel flow. A shorter distance should help the cars complete races under those revised limits without turning every Sunday into a fuel-saving competition.

That is the technical explanation.

Here is my deeply researched and emotionally balanced response:

I would still like my three laps back.

Those final laps are often when Formula 1 becomes most interesting. Tyres begin questioning their life choices, strategies collapse, nervous engineers start staring at screens and one driver suddenly discovers pace that would have been useful about forty minutes earlier.

Three laps can contain an overtake, a puncture, a Safety Car or Ferrari finding an entirely new way to make everybody confused. Those are not unnecessary kilometres. Those are the kilometres that make me stand in front of the television while giving strategic advice to people who cannot hear me.

I already believe races should be slightly longer. Cough, cough… sorry, drivers.

Yes, I know they are operating incredibly physical machines at ridiculous speeds while I am operating a sofa. I respect their challenge completely. However, I spend the entire week waiting for Sunday, organise my day around the race and occasionally reject perfectly reasonable social plans because 20 cars are driving in circles somewhere.

Please allow me to enjoy every available circle and by circle I mean lap.

There is a possible positive side. Shorter races could encourage drivers to push harder, reduce fuel management and make strategies more aggressive. If the cars can attack for 290 kilometres instead of carefully surviving 305, perhaps the racing becomes more intense.

Fine. I am listening.

But Formula 1 will need to prove that. If we lose three laps only to receive the same tyre management, the same predictable strategies and fifteen fewer kilometres of actual racing, I will be requesting a formal meeting with whoever stole my Sunday. Yes yes, I might me making a big deal out of it, so what, as fan i can demand my right for the love of motorsport.

The other proposed changes are more understandable. The existing three-hour window covering delays and stoppages will be removed, while the two-hour limit for actual racing remains. A new hard finishing time will be agreed before each event. This could give race control more flexibility during rain delays and increase the chance of fans receiving the racing they were promised. Practice sessions may also be extended when red flags cause major disruption.

That part makes sense. Credit where it is due.

But reducing the distance of every normal Grand Prix still feels like F1 solving a technical problem by quietly borrowing time from the fans.

Perhaps the 2027 cars will be faster, louder, more competitive and so exciting that nobody notices the missing distance. I genuinely hope so. But until then, I will be keeping a very suspicious eye on the lap counter.

Why, F1 Gods, why?
I am not George Russell. You do not need to test my luck as well. LOL.

Waiting for Formula 1 to return my three laps. Fingers Crossed.
