Avengers Doomsday, I Have a Few Theories and Absolutely No Patience Left.
The Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men coming together is exciting enough, but then I start thinking about who could return, who might fight whom, and whether Doom could actually win. Suddenly, waiting for the film feels rather unnecessary. Just release it, Marvel. I am ready.
I already explored Doom’s familiar face in my previous blog. This time, let’s get into the comics and what they could mean for the story. Comic spoilers ahead, but the movie possibilities are still theories.
There are two different Secret Wars comic stories, and the Russo brothers have said they are borrowing ideas from both for the films. Let me explain, because they tell very different stories.
In the 1984 version, a powerful being called the Beyonder takes heroes and villains to a planet called Battleworld and makes them fight each other. Doctor Doom has another idea: steal the Beyonder’s power instead. Why win a fight when you could become more powerful than the person who arranged it? I don’t trust Doom, but I can follow his thinking here.
The story leading into 2015’s Secret Wars is much darker. Earths from different universes start colliding, and these collisions, called incursions, can destroy both universes. A group of heroes called the Illuminati tries to find a way to stop this. But saving their own Earth could mean destroying the other Earth before the collision happens.
That other Earth has people living on it too. So these heroes are facing a horrible question: would they kill another world’s population to save their own? Now you can see why this could become much more complicated than everyone teaming up to fight Doom.
Now imagine the Avengers having to make that choice, only the other Earth belongs to the X-Men. They would hardly agree to having their world destroyed, would they? Both sides would be protecting their people, and here I would be, wanting everyone to survive while also being ridiculously excited to see them fight.
And then comes Doom with a solution.
In the 2015 comic, he gains the Beyonders’ power with Molecule Man’s help, saves fragments of destroyed realities and joins them into Battleworld. He rules it as God Emperor Doom. Yes, he saves what remains, but everyone now has to live under his rule.
You know someone who does you one favour and never lets you forget it? Imagine if that favour was saving your entire existence. You are never hearing the end of that one.
Reed Richards eventually challenges him, and Molecule Man transfers the power to Reed, who helps rebuild the multiverse. Whether the films follow that route is unknown, but I would love to see Doom offer the heroes a solution they desperately need and absolutely hate.
Of course, all these different realities also give us room for some exciting returns.
Deadpool and Wolverine are on my wish list, although neither is confirmed in the official cast information I checked. Just imagine Wade interrupting Doom halfway through a serious speech while Logan tells him to shut up. For once, I might agree with Wolverine. Let the man explain how we are all going to die first.
An alternate-universe Tony Stark is another possibility, not a confirmed return. Imagine him meeting heroes who watched their Tony die, while he barely knows them. That could hurt beautifully, without undoing the sacrifice of the Iron Man we lost.
That is what excites me about Doomsday. These characters could meet, clash and form friendships we have never seen on screen. And if Doom ends up winning, it could leave us desperate for Secret Wars.
I want the big entrances, obviously, but give me a reason to care after everyone stops cheering. Make me laugh, worry and get emotional over these people all over again.
Just leave Black Widow out of the conversation unless you are bringing her back. I am being very mature about everything else.
