The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team Is Taking F1 Beyond the Circuit, and This Is Exactly What Fans Need

Formula 1 is wonderful, dramatic and occasionally capable of destroying my mood before Sunday lunch. It is also expensive. Attending a Grand Prix is a dream for many fans, but tickets, flights, hotels and the sudden discovery that one sandwich costs the same as a small television can make that dream difficult. Getting anywhere near an F1 garage normally requires a special pass, important connections or an extremely ambitious plan involving a borrowed team uniform. Ahem Ahem.

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team has decided to make things easier. I am happy and sad at the same time… happy cause they have thought about it, sad because it’s not happening in Britain.

During the United States Grand Prix week, the team is opening a free Mercedes F1 Fan Hub in downtown Austin. From 22 to 25 October, fans can visit 400 Congress Avenue and experience a little of what life inside the team feels like.

Free. In Formula 1. I double, triple checked it. Yes, Free… 

Fans will be able to attempt a pit stop on a real F1 car, race on F1 simulators, experience the pit wall through the Trackside with Meta AI activation and see historic Mercedes memorabilia. There will also be a 2026 show car, official merchandise, daily giveaways, local music and Texan food.

Basically, Mercedes has created an F1 playground and placed it in the middle of Austin.

To every fan attending, I am genuinely happy for you. Well, this statement has been independently verified and found to contain approximately 80 per cent jealousy.

Please enjoy the simulator, take photographs with the car and appreciate the memorabilia. If you attempt the pit-stop challenge, remain calm, work quickly and remember to attach every wheel properly. I already know that I would approach the car with complete confidence, drop the wheel nut immediately and become the reason George Russell receives another five-second delay.

Sorry, George. Even away from the circuit, luck continues to investigate you personally. 

What I really love about the Mercedes F1 Fan Hub is that it brings Formula 1 closer to the people who make the sport feel alive. Most fans will never stand inside the team’s actual garage. We will not hear the mechanics preparing the car from a few metres away or casually join the engineers on the pit wall while pretending we understand every number on their screens.

We watch from sofas, pubs, grandstands and sometimes beneath a blanket because the strategy has become emotionally difficult.

That does not make our connection with Formula 1 any less real.

An experience like this gives fans something physical to remember. A child might sit inside a simulator and discover a new dream. Somebody attending their first Grand Prix could see the car up close and become a Mercedes supporter for life. Another fan may attempt a pit stop, discover they are surprisingly talented and begin waiting for Toto Wolff to call.

This is how Formula 1 should continue growing. The racing will always be the centre of everything, but fandom exists far beyond the track. It lives in the shirts people wear, the drivers they defend during completely calm online discussions and the unreasonable confidence we develop after one promising practice session.

Mercedes understands that fans do not only want to observe the sport. We want to feel part of it.

The Fan Hub made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year and will travel to Las Vegas in November. That brings me to one very polite and not remotely desperate question.

When are we getting another one in Britain?

Yes, Goodwood had the first experience, and I respect that. But the Mercedes team is based in Brackley, which means I believe a proper British tour is now completely reasonable. London, Birmingham, Manchester and then perhaps directly outside my house for research purposes.

I will provide tea and coffee. I cannot promise competence during the pit-stop challenge.

Austin fans, this is your opportunity. Visit the hub, enjoy everything and make enough noise to convince Mercedes that these experiences should appear in more cities around the world. Formula 1 can sometimes feel protected by fences, passes and prices, but this takes a small part of that world and opens the door.

That matters.
