‘Paco Plaza’ director of the famous horror movie REC. returns with one more epic scary movie ‘Veronica’ which is a Netflix Original. Rotten Tomatoes rated this Spanish movie 88% which is quite good. I came across good reviews about the movie on various online forums and heard praises for it from family & friends and hence, decided to watch it.

About ‘Veronica’
The movie is based on a real story of 1991 which is also a part of the police records. Veronica is the name of a 15-year-old school girl who takes care of her younger brother and 2 sisters all by herself since their father died. Veronica’s mom runs a bar nearby and is too occupied with work to look after her kids.

One day, Veronica and her friends decide to indulge in a fun activity by using QUIJA board to connect with Veronica’s dead father, that too during a solar eclipse. At the very peak of Solar Eclipse, the QUIJA glass shatters and Veronica goes into trance leaving her friends frightened. She then wakes up in front of a doctor and immediately goes home after recovery.

As days pass, she witnesses strange paranormal activities happening around her. Unaware of the fact of what she got herself into, she tries to keep her little siblings protected from these activities. The story becomes tragic as Veronica feels confused and all alone and doesn’t have anyone to help her out. She tries to tell her mom what she is facing but her mom disregards her concerns and her friends don’t support her anymore. Thus, the complete story revolves around Veronica struggling with life and paranormal activities (Black Shadows) alone. Things become more severe as the movie progresses…

So, is ‘Veronica’ really that scary or is it overrated?
Yes, and No. I am confused – Because, on one hand, the story is based on real-life events, thus can’t expect the movie to be super scary but on the other hand, we know that these incidents were real which makes the movie believable and spooky.

The movie is not scary but the storyline is… if you imagine it all to be real. The direction is world-Class by Paco Plaza and the actor who played Veronica – ‘Sandra Escacena’ was simply brilliant. There are some great scenes. Usually, Horror movies leave a mark on you which you keep thinking about for a long time… But to be honest, I didn’t this movie very impactful. Hence, rating the movie
